Bird recovered – toddler was trapped in the car

They are available 24 hours a day for almost all types of operations: the volunteers from the Villach main fire station. On Monday they had to complete four unusual tasks within a few hours, including freeing a small child from a car.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, the Villach main fire station was alerted to a pollutant leak. A parcel truck lost diesel due to a technical defect. The track led from the Faaker See motorway exit via Widmanngasse into the city center. A good 30 emergency services from the main fire station and the FF Perau bind the fuel on the five kilometer long diesel track. The city’s commercial yard and the state highway administration use sweepers to clean the roadways. We continue with the turntable ladder: A bird got caught in a net on the third floor of a house. The emergency services carefully rescue the animal and take it to the animal shelter for care. Then a concerned father contacts him. His car is parked in a parking lot in the Auen district – with his little daughter locked inside! The key is in the driver’s seat! “Using a special air cushion and plastic wedges, attempts are made from both sides to open the door enough to get to the key,” says Chief Fire Chief Alexander Scharf. Finally, the rear door of the car is opened with tools, the child is released unharmed and comforted with stuffed animals. It is still unclear why the car was locked even though the key was inside. The next alarm occurs while the vehicle is being opened: a home smoke detector in an apartment building beeps! A stove was on, a glass cover cracked from the heat. There was no fire. Move in! The next alarm will definitely ring soon…
