While some anime and TV series have already included nods to Bitcoin and other cryptos, it’s rare whether it is to the point of being the common thread of an episode entire. This is however the case of the episode of Futurama titled “How the West Was 1010001”aired on August 7, 2023.
In this very recent broadcast of the new and 11ᵉ season of the adventures of Planet Expressour intergalactic delivery men go to a distant planet with styles far west And gold Rush very marked. The only big difference? It is that we come across bitcoin miners.
In the teaser for the episode (excerpt below), we see Fry, Bender and the whole gang arrive in a mining village called “DOGE CITY”in reference of course at the memecoin with the famous smiling shiba dog logo: Dogecoin.

Bitcoin: “a pyramid scam for dungeons” in Futurama
The authors of Futurama unfortunately fall, subsequently, into the cliches of mining bitcoins “energy guzzling”. As the heroes search for thallium to use in crypto-mining chips, we learn that BTC miners “use such colossal amounts of energy that they ionize the atmosphere” of the planet in question.
Likewise, the usual (but not current) high volatility bitcoin price is criticized several times during the episode. It would still be fair game, but the authors went so far as to have Leela tell Professor Farnsworth that Bitcoin and cryptos are “a pyramid scheme for the scumbags”. It’s more than a low blow!
For its part, the twisting robot Bender seems to be taken by a craving for BTC way thirsty for gold, if we are to believe the image below, also taken from this “cryptonesque” episode… Unless it serves as wallet Bitcoin on legs?
If we can recognize the Wild West aspect of the crypto sector until a few years ago, and we appreciate seeing the characters of Futurama again, some spades are however particularly violent against the cryptosphere.
