Bitcoin PIzza Day, a major event for bitcoiners

the bitcoin pizza day became one of the Bitcoin (BTC) community’s most anticipated and celebrated birthdays with its “birth” on January 3, 2009.

This gourmet celebration has its origins in May 18, 2010 when the programmer Laszlo Hanyecz leave a message on the specialized forum bitcointalk. His request is simple: he would like someone to prepare two large pizzas for him or that the person go and buy them in a restaurant; in exchange for which, he would give the delivery man 10,000 bitcoins!

Original message posted by Laszlo Hanyecz on the Bitcointalk forum

He is a 19-year-old student named Jeremy Sturdivant who will finally buy two pizzas from the restaurant Papa John’s and will take care of this race at 10,000 BTC. I’ll let you calculate how much that would be today. But don’t imagine that this student has since become a billionaire. According to the New York Post, he did not keep the BTCs.

“But Sturdivant didn’t save the bitcoins for the future; instead, he spent them all on trips.”

Four days later, the first Bitcoin transaction took place, being the May 22, 2010. Beyond the anecdotal nature of this transaction, we note that Bitcoin changed status that day and went from a simple “theoretical monetary experiment” to a very practical application: making a monetary transaction exactly as one can do it with fiat currency.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, the Bitcoin Pizza Day was relatively unknown until 2014 when the story was relayed by mainstream media such as the New York Times, ABC News, Slate and Tech Crunch.

Note that Laszlo Hanyecz, the programmer who performed the transaction, is notably behind the creation of the program that allows Bitcoin miners to use a graphics card (GPU) instead of a processor (CPU). He was surely light years away from imagining that his little message on the forum would generate such enthusiasm a few years later.

Launch of Bitcoin Pizza by Anthony Pompliano

In 2021, many events around this anniversary day have been organized all over the planet. We remember that of the investor Anthony Pompliano (Pomp) who is at the origin of an initiative intended to support the efforts of the “Bitcoin Development Fund” of the “Human Rights Foundation”.
