A black couple adopted white twins who were fostered immediately after birth. Again and again the two of them are stopped by police officers or questioned suspiciously by strangers. They are accused of kidnapping the children.

Jennifer McDuffie-Moore is an educator and initiator of a childcare program in the US state of Pennsylvania. She and her husband Harry have been taking in foster children since 2009, such as twins Brayden and Trevor, who came to see them straight after they were born. Due to the birth mother’s drug addiction, the two stayed with the couple and were eventually adopted by McDuffie-Moore and her husband.

Nevertheless, the couple have to justify themselves again and again for the twins, because: Jennifer and Harry are both black, the children white. Not only are they often stopped by police officers, but strangers would also accuse them of kidnapping the two children, as McDuffie-Moore reports on the SWNS broadcaster.

A woman was watching them in the playground

“A woman had seen us playing on the playground,” says the 43-year-old. “When one of the twins had a tantrum, she told me she was going to call the police. I was kidding the children and she thought I was going to kidnap them,” the mother continued. This has already happened several times, even when the twins did not want to go home after visiting the playground.

The couple report similar problems when they wanted to adopt Keenan, also white, in 2016. But after the murder of George Floyd and the associated “Black Lives Matter” protests, racism increased even further, says the mother of six. “It is more common for a white family to adopt a black child than the other way around,” she says. Even when they submitted the adoption papers, there were a lot of questions about whether the two were able to adopt white children. It took 2695 days (a good seven years, editor’s note) to adopt Keenan because we’re black, “says McDuffie-Moore.

Brayden and Trevor came to them when they were three months old

The couple first took in the twins for a weekend in July 2018 to relieve another foster family. Both show severe developmental delays because their mother made them addicted to drugs at birth. After a year it was clear that the two should stay forever. The twins join the McDuffie-Moores’ biological children: Joy, 21, and Kourtney, eleven, and their adopted children, Keenan, ten, and Sanchez, eight.

Says McDuffie-Moore, “People don’t realize that children who come to us in infancy have never known another mother or father.” They would have changed every diaper and taken care of every ailment since they were three months old. “We never tell the kids what to call us, we leave it up to them – and Braydon and Trevor call us mom and dad,” adds the mother.
