Black Panther 2, Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy 3… Everything Marvel plans for the future of the MCU

Disney and Marvel are far from done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 2022 and 2023 (and in 2024?), many films and series are planned. Here is the complete program.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has entered a new era since the broadcast of the series via Disney+ and the closing of the Thanos arc (with Avengers: Endgame). They allow to extend a little more the immense empire of entertainment built by Marvel and Disney, in addition to the films which continue to flood the big screen.

The MCU’s latest productions have introduced the concept of the multiverse, in the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What movies are planned for the sequel? What series will be broadcast soon Disney +? What arcs can come out of the writers’ imagination? We take stock knowing that the two multinationals had initially formalized their plans for Phase 4 at San Diego Comic Con 2019.

Note that the few release dates mentioned are likely to change depending on the strategy desired by Marvel and Disney.

Warning, this article contains some spoilers.

Movies

Thor: Love and Thunder—July 13, 2022

Guess who’s back in the Thor franchise? Natalie Portman, the love-interest asgardian superhero human. Except that she has since taken the lead and will play a female Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. Taika Waititi, the man behind the hilarious Thor: Ragnarok, will be responsible for making it plausible for us while Christian Bale will play the villain (Gorr, the Godslayer). Expect to laugh.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—November 9, 2022

The sequel to the only MCU production nominated for the Best Picture Oscar will be without Chadwick Boseman, who died tragically after a long battle with illness. Disney and Marvel have already announced that there will be no replacement for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The sequel, still directed by Ryan Coogler, will pay homage to the actor and focus on the other characters.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania—February 15, 2023

There will therefore be a third film dedicated to Ant-Man, the superhero capable of becoming tiny. Director Peyton Reed, along with the cast of Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer, will return. They’ll be joined by Jonathan Majors, who will play Kang the Conqueror — one of Marvel’s greatest villains.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 — May 3, 2023

A time ejected due to old tweets with dubious humor, James Gunn will finally have the opportunity to conclude his trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy (after taking care of the Suicide Squad reboot). The script should incorporate Thor, who leaves to travel with Star-Lord and the others at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The comic evolution of the character, initiated in Thor: Ragnarokwants that.

The Marvels—July 26, 2023

First MCU movie starring a superhero Captain Marvel introduced a powerful character into the universe. She was expected to have a bigger role in Avengers: Endgame, where she ultimately only appears surreptitiously. We will therefore have to wait The Marvels (formerly Captain Marvel 2) to continue discovering the character embodied by Brie Larsson. The blockbuster will be directed by Nia DaCosta and is expected to be the reunion with Monica Rambeau (seen in Wanda Vision) and Kamala Khan.

Blade—NC

Blade, the half-man, half-vampire superhero, will make his big return to the big screen. Marvel and Disney have formalized a new film of which we only know one thing: Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali who will take over from Wesley Snipes. This is already excellent news.

The Fantastic 4 — NC

man behind Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way HomeJon Watts was to have the heavy task of relaunching The Fantastic 4 in the cinema. He eventually withdrew from the project.

Deadpool 3 — NC

Disney didn’t buy Fox to let Deadpool down. A third film, still worn by Ryan Reynolds in the role of the irreverent superhero, was mentioned by Kevin Feige. If we will have to wait a little longer before the release, we can’t wait to see how Deadpool will be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (knowing that he does not appear in the sequel to Doctor Strange, despite the very advanced concept of the multiverse). We already know the director: Shawn Levy.

Captain America 4—NC

Series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, broadcast on Disney +, paved the way for a fourth feature film centered on Captain America. Except that, this time, it is no longer Chris Evans who will take on the costume, but Anthony Mackie.

Time travel without the notion of causality introduced into Avengers: Endgame opens a lot of doors for the sequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nothing would prevent the scriptwriters from going back in time to take other branches within the currently known chronology. We can even speak of a very opportunistic pirouette to do what has already been done… but otherwise. Finally, the concept of the multiverse is now a powerful narrative base for screenwriters. Thanks to him, they can imagine everything.

It also remains to be defined how the Fox-owned licenses will be integrated into the MCU now that Disney has recovered everything. In the future, there will be even more comics to pick from.

Last confirmation on the films: Spider-Man will not leave the MCU, after a financial agreement reached with Sony Pictures, which owns the rights.

The rest ?

Given the pool of characters it has, Marvel can chain the series to feed Disney +. Programs on the Wasp, Wang or even Shuri, the little sister of Black Panter, would be adapted to the platform and would allow the MCU to expand even more. Not without quenching the thirst of fans who are only asking for that.
