In 2018 "Black Panther" became an absolute box-office hit. Disney + wants to take fans back to Wakanda with a new series.

In 2018 Marvel brought another comic book hero to life with "Black Panther". The story of King T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020), who died of cancer in August 2020, quickly became a box office megahit. The streaming service Disney + now wants to take fans on a trip to the fictional African country of Wakanda again – in the form of a series.

As Marvel announced in a statement, the series will also be directed by Ryan Coogler (34, "Creed"), who was already responsible for "Black Panther". His company Proximity Media have signed a five-year contract with Disney. However, details of the content of the series have not yet been revealed. All that is known is that she "plays in the Kingdom of Wakanda".

Disney CEO Bob Iger called Coogler a "unique storyteller" who, through "his vision and breadth", has become one of the "most outstanding filmmakers of his generation". With the comic book adaptation, the director created a "cultural moment" that represented a "turning point".

Production for "Black Panther 2" is in full swing

The Californian Coogler is currently working on the screen sequel to "Black Panther", which will be released in July 2022. The role of Chadwick Boseman is not to be re-cast, as Marvel and Disney announced in December. Instead, the upcoming film should "honor the legacy" that the late actor helped create.
