In the thriller Black River, broadcast this Sunday evening on France 2, Vincent Cassel plays police commander François Visconti, a man worn out by his profession who is entrusted with a case involving the disappearance of a teenager. The opportunity to remember that the actor was not the first choice for the role.
It was Gérard Depardieu who was initially to play the policeman in Black River, but the actor was hospitalized on the third day of filming and left his place to Vincent Cassel. “Vincent Cassel agreed to play the main character”remembers director Erick Zonca. He came directly from Brazil, he jumped into history with both feet and suddenly put on the clothes of this commander without any prior preparation.

Erick Zonca and screenwriter Lou de Fanget Signolet imagined the figure of Commander Visconti, giving him all the attributes of the genre: he is a disillusioned cop but relentless at his job, imbued with his investigations, which does not mean infallible. “It’s common in the police. He drinks too much, obviously, and sometimes turns out to be terribly dysfunctional”says the filmmaker. “Especially in relation to his own family, in relation to his son.”

“He is well aware that he is failing in his paternal obligations but even more, he knows that he feels a lack of love, an almost visceral rejection towards this adolescent who disappoints him”continues Zonca. “Which will have consequences and repercussions on the investigation he is conducting and which is precisely about the disappearance of a sixteen-year-old boy.”
