Apple intends to pass what it calls “ spatial computing » in a new era, particularly through even more immersive content. For this, the Apple brand has teamed up with optical specialists Blackmagic Design and Canon.

During the inaugural WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple introduced visionOS 2, the new iteration of its mixed reality operating system, just four months after the Vision Pro went on sale. If the company has mainly focused on optimizing navigation on the OS, it also attaches great importance to the immersive experiences enabled by its VR headset.

Immersive professional content

The Cupertino company designed the sensors of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max so that they are able to capture spatial content, which can be viewed in 3D from the Vision Pro. She now wants to go further. “ Spatial video can also be used by professional videographers to tell powerful creative stories and branded product stories “, she says.

Thus, Apple has established a partnership with Blackmagic Design, which develops cutting-edge video technologies. The Australian company is currently designing a camera specially designed to film immersive content for the Vision Pro. It has a resolution of 8,160 x 7,200 pixels per eye as well as a dynamic range of 16 stops for immersive cinema content in stereoscopic 3D at 90 frames per second.

The device, available later this year, will be incorporated into a workflow including DaVinci Resolve Studio editing software and Apple Compressor. It will allow professionals to “ bring their stories to life » through the Immersive Video functionality offered in the headset.

Canon is also in the game

Apple is also collaborating with Canon, which is working on a new dedicated space lens for its R7 camera. The manufacturer is not new to virtual reality, a sector for which it has already developed objectives. Coupled with Final Cut Pro and a new Vimeo application for Vision Pro, this lens will “ facilitate the creation and sharing of spatial videos with commercial audiences », Indicates the Californian giant.
