Blade Runner will have the right to its adaptation in series. Amazon Prime Video has ordered a first season. It will be a sequel to the two films released so far. Ridley Scott, director of the first film, will act as producer.
Amazon Prime intends to bet on huge licenses for its series. While the company is already exploiting the Lord of the Rings universe, another beloved cinema saga will appear on the platform: Blade Runner.
Variety indeed indicates that Amazon has officially ordered a live-action series (with real actors) named Blade Runner 2099. As its name suggests, it will take place well after the two films: the first took place in 2019 and the second in 2049. We can therefore expect the same universe, but with new characters.
Ridley Scott at the helm for this Blade Runner series
At the moment, we don’t have any details on the series itself. However, it was announced that Ridley Scott would return to business as executive producer and Silka Luisa will serve as showrunner. She has already worked as a screenwriter on series like Halo or Shining Girls. The project has just been launched, we do not have a release date yet. It will not be necessary to wait for it for several years.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a Blade Runner series. It is even a long-time project. With Amazon, the production seems to have hit the jackpot. The company does not hesitate to put the means to give life to ambitious universes. We saw it with The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time or The Boys.
The Life of the Blade Runner Franchise was not easy. Adaptation (very free) of the book by Philip K Dick, the first film of 1982 did not find its audience when it was released, but slowly became cult over the video re-releases and re-edits. In 2017, its sequel Blade Runner 2049 hit theaters. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, it was not a resounding commercial success either (260 million dollars in receipts for a budget of 150 million dollars). But like her eldest, she quickly became a cult.
Blade Runner is therefore a franchise very appreciated by the public, but paradoxically shunned at each exit. The series could allow him to really reveal his potential. The very visual and very detailed universe of the license lends itself excellently to the format.
