The execution was announced by the Mizan judicial authority on Monday on its web portal. According to the state news site Irna, the accused were hanged early in the morning.

For years, human rights activists have criticized the use of the death penalty in a country ruled by Shia clerics. According to the human rights organization Hengaw, the regime has already executed 199 prisoners this year. However, executions for blasphemy have been extremely rare in Iran.
