Already on the opening day, the operators of the Block chance 23 the visitors from a scam. Specifically, it says: “Beware of scattered flyers that should under no circumstances be scanned! Please dispose of them immediately and notify the on-site team if anyone is spotted distributing these items.” One of the two flyers that the BTC-ECHO team also got their hands on at the crypto conference promises to win a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT. The scammers are still unknown. In order to take part in the supposed competition, you have to connect a Metamask wallet, for example. However, this would give the attackers access to the assets.
The warning also went around on the second day of the conference: “There are no Blockchance flyers at the venue, it’s all fraud. Don’t connect your wallet!”
A crypto expert who wishes to remain anonymous explains to BTC-ECHO how the technical level of the scam works. Each token on the wallet counts as an invocation of a smart contract. For a token or NFT to be defined as a smart contract on the wallet, it only has to provide certain functions.
However, what happens when these functions are called is decided solely by the author of the smart contract. On the other hand, Metamask has a protective function and asks the wallet owner: “May the smart contract access your wallet?” However, since some trade fair visitors wanted to win the BAYC-NFT, they confirmed the metamask request – and the fraudster gained access to the assets. It is not yet clear how many visitors scanned the QR code.

On Blockchance 23, however, many exciting speakers cavort in addition to suspected fraudsters. The well-known Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff, for example, discussed the usefulness of gold. At the same time, Bison co-founder Dr. Ulli Spankowski, which regulation is important for a future-proof stock exchange. On the other hand, there are also representatives from the traditional financial sector with a crypto focus at the event.
