More than 30 dead after Russian airstrike

In the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, an apartment block was hit by an airstrike. First, Ukrainian authorities report 22 fatalities, later the number has to be corrected to 33 people. In the meantime, the rescue work had to be suspended due to shelling.

At least 33 people were killed in an airstrike on the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, according to Ukrainian authorities. There were also 18 injured, Interior Ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said on Telegram. There had previously been talk of 22 fatalities.

“The rescue work had been temporarily suspended due to heavy shelling,” the rescue service said. A video shows how firefighters put out a block of flats. Parts of the building were destroyed, windows torn from their anchorage. An inner courtyard resembled a rubble field.

The city is not far from the Belarusian border and, according to Ukrainian sources, is surrounded by Russian troops. On Thursday last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order for an attack on Ukraine. According to UN estimates, more than 240 civilians have been killed since then.
