August 31st marks the second full moon this month and is again a supermoon. You can read here what this is all about and which zodiac signs benefit from it the most.

This August is a special month from an astrological – and astronomical – point of view: it began with a full moon and it ends with one. Like the full moon on the 1st of the month, the one on August 31st is one Supermoon: It’s bigger and brighter than usual.

The reason for this is that the moon is currently particularly close to the earth. Since the moon’s orbit around the earth describes an ellipse, the distance between the two bodies is not always the same: the furthest distance is around 406,000 kilometers, the shortest 356,000 kilometers. Almost ten hours before the peak of the full moon phase on Thursday – 3:37 a.m. our time – the earth’s satellite reaches us at its closest point, at which it is around 357,000 kilometers away from the earth.

Compared to an average full moon, the super moon shines about 15 percent brighter and appears 7 percent larger. In relation to its counterpart, i.e. a moon that is around 406,000 kilometers from Earth at the full moon phase, the two values logically double: A super moon lights up our sky by 30 percent more and appears to us a whopping 14 percent larger than a mini moon.

Blue Moon: That only happens every few years

The second feature of the full moon on August 31, and the reason we call it the “Blue Moon,” is that it is the second full moon in a month, or the third full moon in a four-full moon season. There are about 29.5 days between two full moons, so we observe a full moon in most months – and in most seasons, which consist of three months, just three. Thus, only 354 days have to pass for twelve full moons, but for us a year has 365 days. And whether we’ve all come along or not, the result is that in a few years we’ll be counting 13 full moons.

In order to distinguish the full moon, which is out of line, from the twelve others – Lenzmond, Harvest Moon and whatever they are called – our ancestors christened it the Blue Moon. According to justified assumptions, the name came about around 400 years ago. Incidentally, the English expression “Once in a blue moon” is related to this phenomenon, which means something like: Every few years. In any case, the importance of the blue full moon does it justice, because we experience it every two to three years. However, the fact that the full moon on August 31 is both a super moon and a blue moon is a special case that occurs much more rarely.

Astrologers attribute an extraordinary effect to the blue supermoon on Thursday, which incidentally occurs in the zodiac sign Pisces. According to the horoscope, the following signs of the zodiac can be felt in a very positive way.
