Fruity blueberry jam is extremely popular as a spread on bread. We reveal how you can easily make the delicious blueberry jam yourself.

Blueberry jam: the ingredients

  • 1 kg of blueberries
  • 500 g preserving sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Spices of your choice (e.g. vanilla)
  • Jam jars

Blueberry jam: the preparation

  1. Rinse the jam jars thoroughly with hot water, so that they are sterile.
  2. To make the blueberry jam, first wash the blueberries and let them drain well. Those who prefer fine jam should go for the berries Sift through a sieve or puree beforehandso that it does not contain any bits.
  3. Then the berries are boiled in a saucepan. Add sugar and lemon juice and cook the mixture for around, stirring occasionally for four minutes on. To refine the blueberry jam, you can, for example, scrape out a vanilla pod and stir in the pulp.
  4. In the next step you test with the gelling sample whether the Jam has the right consistency. To do this, put a teaspoon of the blueberries on a plate. If the fruit mass has not set after two minutes, you have to boil the berries a little longer.
  5. Finally, fill the blueberry jam into the jars and screw them shut with a lid. If you then upside down, the jars are sealed airtight. The blueberry jam is stored in a cool and dry place Shelf life for six to nine months.

Tip: If you don’t have fresh blueberries on hand, you can of course also make the jam with frozen blueberries.

The difference between jam and jam

Traditionally, the difference between the two terms is that jam does without pieces of fruit, while jam contains them. However, the EU actually stipulated in a regulation that Jam may only be made from citrus fruits.

Jam then refers to all other types of fruit. However, this distinction has not caught on in German usage. If the Fruit content in the glass over 350 grams it is called an extra jam. A jelly, on the other hand, consists only of fruit juice without any fruit components.
