It is a major step in its development that Blue Sky begins. The social network created by Jack Dorsey is now open to all registrations. Something to bother X.com ?

The turbulent takeover of Twitter, which has since become X, by Elon Musk, has led many people to look for an alternative to this platform. But for the moment, no player has managed to establish itself in a credible manner, whether it is the decentralized tool Mastodon, or the latest Meta network, namely Threads. Many have since pinned their hopes on Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, who has embarked on a new social network project Bluesky. Since its launch, the latter was open only by registration… until this week.

Bluesky opens the door wide

It is a social network that has been awaited for many months by many people, even up to European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who had advertised it several months previously. Bluesky, opened last spring, is changing status. While it was only open by invitation, the platform seems to have grown enough to now accommodate all registrations.

It currently has 3 million users, a figure that should now quickly increase, especially when we observe how a network like Threads saw the number of account creations explode when it launched.

The future leader of decentralized networks?

At first glance, the platform resembles its competitors, in particular because of its interface quite similar to that of X or Threads, which displays by default a chronological flow of posts produced by users. But its philosophy is clearly that of decentralization, like Mastodon. Bluesky therefore expects over time to see users create their own instance within the federation, each with their own moderation rules, and development in their own hands.

We truly believe that the future of social services is, and must be, open and decentralized » explained to the media Engadget CEO Jay Graber. It remains to be seen whether Bluesky will be able to do better than Mastodon, whose method of use always attracts Internet users less than that of centralized platforms.
