Bluetooth has become an integral part of our everyday lives. The radio standard facilitates communication between cell phones and accessories such as headphones or smart watches. Since its introduction in 1999, Bluetooth has continued to evolve. The last major version jump was a few years ago. Bluetooth 5.0 was announced back in 2016. Bluetooth 6.0 has been a long time coming since then. Now the wait is finally over.
In September 2024, the Bluetooth interest group Bluetooth SIG published the new standard called Bluetooth 6.0. Among other things, specifications that are particularly relevant for developers and manufacturers, such as an expanded feature set for the connection levels and an update for frame spaces and ISOAL, were presented. These primarily serve to make the Bluetooth specifications more flexible and adapt to newer devices and requirements.

But the update also brings some new features for Bluetooth users. Thanks to further improvements in transmission technology, Bluetooth 6.0 has further improved latency, energy efficiency and transmission stability. And with the new technology called Bluetooth Channel Sounding, finding nearby devices using Bluetooth will be even easier, faster and safer, which is particularly important for applications such as Find My networks.
This means that Bluetooth devices gain even better awareness of their surroundings, and applications such as digital car keys become even more secure. According to current information, the assumption that Bluetooth could support 6 GHz transmissions has not been confirmed.
The first devices with support for Bluetooth 6.0 are expected in 2025.
