Blumhouse Productions: after horror films, make way for video games!


A well-known production house for horror film aficionados -but not only!-, Blumhouse announces the creation of a division dedicated to video games.

Founded in 2000 and mainly known for being behind many horror productions, but not only (it notably co-produced Damien Chazelle’s second film, Whiplash), the production house Blumhouse, which bears the name of its founder, Jason Blum, announces the creation of a subsidiary dedicated to the development of video games, as well as their publishing.

Baptized Blumhouse Games, it will concentrate in particular on developing partnerships with independent development studios, to create horror/terror games, remaining in line with the credo of the parent company. And, also faithful to the logic of Jason Blum’s ultra-controlled budgets, those of these future video games will not exceed 10 million dollars.

A budget that remains quite bearable, judging by the (over)abundance of horror video games that abound, especially on the Steam platform, and sometimes developed with bits of string.

But there are fortunately some beautiful nuggets if we follow this logic, such as the sensational game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a Survival Horror released in 2010 and developed by a tiny team of 5 people, with a budget of $360,000. Huge box, which will sell more than 1.36 million copies.

At the head of Blumhouse Games: Zach Wood, an industry veteran, who notably worked for the Arkhane and Santa Monica studios (as a reminder, the studio behind the franchise god of war), who will be supported in his task by Don Sechler, a former Playstation.

Either way, that’s good news. Annapurna Interactive, a subsidiary of Annapurna Pictures created in 2016, felt very lonely for a while; one of the rare survivors of the video game divisions created by film studios.
