BMW continues to explore quantum technology with Pasqal

Like other automakers, BMW is exploring the possibilities of quantum computing. The auto giant is working with French flagship Pasqal to improve the manufacturing and design processes of its vehicles.

The company will put its quantum computer at the service of BMW, to help the automotive giant improve its manufacturing and design processes. The technology could be applied to reduce manufacturing process costs and shorten cycle times.

The two companies announced on May 11 a new phase of their collaboration to “make BMW Group cars safer, lighter and more fuel-efficient through accelerated simulations”, specifies a press release.

BMW brings together quantum players

The two companies have already collaborated in the past on the development of quantum computing methods for chemistry and materials science. These methods can for example be used to optimize the design of batteries at the atomic level.

Pasqal manufactures neutral atom quantum processors. By merging with Dutch start-up Qu&Co last January, Pasqal has set itself the goal of delivering a 1,000-qubit quantum solution by 2023.

Beyond Pasqal, BMW is also working with other quantum players, such as Honeywell, with whom the manufacturer has studied the design of quantum algorithms for supply chain management.

The German automobile group even launched a call for talent at the end of last year intended to encourage external organizations to propose solutions that will help the automaker make the best use of quantum technologies.

Modeling of metal forming applications

Pasqal’s algorithm will make it possible to solve differential equations, that is to say “problems where the change of one of the variables does not uniformly affect the result”, indicates a joint press release. With this technology, BMW wants to analyze the applicability of quantum computing technology to modeling metal forming applications. These applications require “extensive simulations,” according to the partners, to ensure auto part compliance.

According to Pasqal, these use cases are “excellent candidates” for achieving a quantum advantage with his algorithms. In fact, the simulations will take place over a period of six months in the Pasqal facilities.

“The renewal and extension of our collaboration with BMW Group is a clear sign of the value that Pasqal can bring to our customers. Each time we collaborate with BMW Group, we discover something more we can do to help them develop superior automobiles,” says Georges-Olivier Reymond, CEO of Pasqal.

“Pasqal currently offers the only method on the market for solving these types of differential equations with quantum technology, which are essential for running efficient and accurate simulations,” he continues.
