Boba Fett’s book: Mando’s return doesn’t do the “Star Wars” series any favors

THE BOOK BY BOBA FETT

Episode 5 of “The Book of Boba Fett” offered everything that “Star Wars” fans could wish for – just not Boba Fett. Netzwelt explains why Mando’s return has some downsides.

  • The Book of Boba Fett fulfilled fan dreams as the Disney+ series brought back Din Djarin from The Mandalorian.
  • This “guest appearance” spanned the entire episode, leaving no room for Boba.
  • The exciting episode sells Boba short and could have negative consequences.

When Fennec Shand announced support for the fight against the Pykes in Episode 4 of “The Book of Boba Fett” and the musical theme from “The Mandalorian” was played, “Star Wars” fans were of course all the more excited for the next episode .

Nevertheless, after this acoustic indication, nobody would have expected that Mando would even be the focus of episode 5 and thus completely oust Boba from his series. Anyone who is impatiently waiting for the 3rd season of “The Mandalorian” was of course happy about this unexpected return, but “The Return of the Mandalorian” has rather negative consequences for “The Book of Boba Fett”.

Boba is sold short

Anyone who loves the “Star Wars” universe above all for its imaginative creatures, varied planets and exciting adventures will also get their money’s worth with “The Book of Boba Fett”. However, those who finally wanted to see the cold-hearted bounty hunter Boba Fett from the original film trilogy in action were in for a nasty surprise.

Although Boba no longer wants to be told anything by anyone, his criminal rule on Tatooine is based above all on respect and not on fear. Boba Fett was once a straight villain, now he’s a hero and not everyone likes that.

Still, it’s just weird that Din Djarin, a very new character who debuted in 2019, can hijack an entire episode of Boba Fett’s series, and that fact is still celebrated by so many “Star Wars” fans.

There is no question that the 5th episode was an extremely exciting, entertaining and informative episode. But at the same time it was also an episode of “The Mandalorian” and it has no place in “The Book of Boba Fett”.

It’s almost as if Jon Favreau, the episode’s writer, surmised that viewers would actually much rather see Mando. But that simply undersells Boba Fett and leaves even less time to tell the show’s story.

Everything must be seen

Although “The Book of Boba Fett” was announced in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 and could therefore be understood as a spin-off, on the other hand Boba Fett has been a well-known character for decades and so “The Book of Boba Fett” actually works as an independent one series – until now!

“The Book of Boba Fett” viewers who haven’t seen “The Mandalorian” won’t be able to relate to Episode 5 at all. Who is this character? Who is Grogu? What is the darksaber? An episode that would have left nothing to be desired as the first episode of The Mandalorian season 3 feels completely out of place in The Book of Boba Fett.

The new episode is also a problem for “The Mandalorian” fans who do not want to see “The Book of Boba Fett” because its content is too important. So Disney+ seems to be assuming that “Star Wars” fans watch all the series that come out, otherwise you’ll have to reckon with confusion once your favorite series starts up again.

Animated series such as “The Clone Wars” or “Rebels” expanded the “Star Wars” canon and various characters and events from them were taken up again in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett”, but explained in such a way that everyone can understand what is happening. Thus, the animated series remain optional, which is no longer the case for the live-action series.

The remaining two episodes will show how big Mando’s role in “The Book of Boba Fett” will be, if we will see Grogu again and if Boba’s story might extend into the third season of “The Mandalorian”. But if viewers are disappointed after Episode 6 because “only” Boba was seen in “The Book of Boba Fett”, then Disney + did something wrong.
