While for two weeks, the search to find the young Kiely seemed to give nothing, her body could have been found this weekend. The 16-year-old girl who disappeared at a party in California had not given any sign of life since a last message sent to her mother in which she told her to come home soon. The “New York Post” indicates that divers discovered Sunday a body in a submerged car in a water point located not far from the place of the party. If the body has not yet been officially identified – an autopsy must be carried out -, it was inside a Honda CRV 2013 similar to the one driven by the girl.

If the body is that of Kiely, it remains to be seen why and how she ended up there. Had she been drinking alcohol or taking drugs? The investigation will have to determine if other people are implicated in this tragedy. In total, between 200 and 300 people, teenagers and young adults, were at the party, but few agreed to cooperate with the police. “People aren’t talking to us,” Officer Angela Musallam of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office told the New York Post. “A lot of people who were at the party are going to start college and they’re afraid it’ll ruin their future, or something like that,” she added.

Lack of cooperation from party attendees

According to the “Sun”, men in their late twenties would indeed have distributed free drugs, including mushrooms and cocaine during the evening. Alcohol was also allegedly consumed, which is illegal in the United States under 21 years of age. “Although we condemn illegal activities, for this particular investigation, they are not our priority. We are not going to arrest anyone for drug and alcohol use. We want to find Kiely,” assured Angela Musallam. “We ask people who know something, do you want to live with this weight on your conscience? You will have to live until the end of your life with the idea that a family will never have the answers concerning their daughter. Just tell us where she is. Her family has suffered enough,” she added. Earlier this week, Lt. Joshua Barnhart acknowledged “an isolated incident that we were able to get over” in which some adults advised teens and young adults not to talk to investigators.

Authorities said last week that they had recovered CCTV footage showing the teenager on the Friday evening of her disappearance, around 6:30 p.m., in a shop in Truckee, where the party was taking place. The images have been released, in particular by the FBI, but do not, however, provide new leads for research. On Saturday, the police explained at a press conference that the last internet data from the girl’s phone was located at the campsite, near the water, “but it is difficult to give an exact location, outside or in the water”. After releasing several photos of Kiely, police on Sunday revealed another image that matched an item of clothing she may have been wearing that evening. It’s a white and pink hoodie with ‘Odd Future’ written on it that she was filmed wearing at the party. Last week, police said Kiely may also have borrowed another hoodie, this time reading, “You don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear.” These words are taken from the lyrics of a song by Lana Del Rey.
