The Chinese manufacturer BOE has just announced the production of a 27-inch Full HD LCD panel, with a native refresh rate greater than 500 Hz, i.e. capable of displaying up to 500 images. per second. To achieve this, the company explains that it replaced thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on amorphous silicon (a-Si) with oxide-based transistors (probably a derivative of indium gallium zinc oxide or IGZO). .
For now, this screen is only at the prototype stage and the Chinese giant is still far from being able to produce this type of very fast LCD panel in volume. And explain: “Instability of the traditional oxide film microstructure under bias stress, ambient light, high voltage, or other instability issues such as device performance degradation or power issues. adaptation of the copper and oxide process, are common problems that must be solved before industrialization.” In addition, the real persistence time of LCD technology raises the question of the interest of such a high refresh rate. The best TN LCD panels go down to 3 ms, or just over 330 frames per second actually displayed. To display more than 500 per second, the actual afterglow time must fall to less than 2 ms; a feat which, for the moment, is only possible with Oled technology, whose persistence time is around 0.1 ms.
Currently, you have to make do with 280 Hz monitors in Full HD like the Asus VG279QM, or 240 Hz in Quad HD (Samsung Odyssey G7 27″), or even – for lovers of raw performance – opt for an Nvidia Reflex monitor at 360Hz.
