LA PAZ (Reuters) – A Bolivian court on Friday found former interim president Jeanine Anez guilty of planning a coup in 2019.
The 54-year-old former interim president was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Jeanine Anez, who ruled Bolivia for less than a year after Evo Morales left power after disputed elections and violent protests, was arrested in March 2021 on charges of terrorism, sedition and conspiracy.
Jeanine Anez continues to claim her innocence. “I did not manage to become president, but I did what I had to do. I assumed the responsibility of the presidency by obligation, according to the established Constitution”, Jeanine Anez told the judge .
“We are concerned about the way this case proceeded and we call on the courts to review the way the proceedings were conducted,” Human Rights Watch (HRW) researcher Cesar Munoz said in an interview. before the announcement of the verdict.
