In order to finance his passion project “Megalopolis”, “The Godfather” director Francis Ford Coppola had to sell parts of his winery and raise a lot of money. There was no support from the film studios because no one believed in his project. In Cannes 2024 he wants to prove it to everyone with “Megalopolis”!

Coppola, who was probably the most important director in the 1970s with “The Godfather” and “The Godfather 2” as well as “The Dialogue” and “Apocalypse Now”, is accordingly legendary and probably every cinephile would wish that his passion project was worthy of his life’s work is implemented.

Around two hours before the red carpet premiere, there was a press screening of “Megalopolis” in Cannes on May 16, 2024 and many journalists were looking forward to the film. Already at the beginning of the film, when the logo of Coppola’s production company American Zoetrope was displayed, there was applause.

But the enthusiasm didn’t last long. At the end of the film there was occasional clapping, but boos were loud. Some of the journalists expressed their displeasure and while the press left the screening, a few meters away in the other cinema, Francis Ford Coppola entered the premiere hall with a walking stick in his hand to applause to show his film.

It was a heartbreaking moment for me as a film fan as the 85-year-old tremblingly made his way to the cinema, looking forward to the premiere of his film, unaware that this very film was being booed by representatives of the press in the neighboring hall.

The fact that Coppola put so much energy and initiative into the film is remarkable and everyone would have wished him a successful “comeback” to top form. Especially since Coppola’s wife died about a month ago. Seeing his heart’s project probably fail like this will hit the director hard again and I’m very, very sorry for that.

Unfortunately, I also have to admit that “Megalopolis” is not a good film. You can find out more about this in my film review of “Megalopolis”. To make sure you don’t miss anything from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, don’t forget to follow us on Instagram!
