The global vaccination campaign against the coronavirus is ongoing. Many countries are already at full throttle on the boosters. The vaccination database “Our World in Data” shows statistics from most countries on the progress of booster vaccination. However, there are big differences between the vaccination turbo and the bottom lights (see graphic).
The front runner when it comes to booster is Chile. Over 58 percent of the population there has already been boosted (all figures as of January 3, 2022). However, the country started giving the third vaccination back in July. Israel, which started the booster vaccination only a little later, is also at the top with 46 percent.
Great Britain and Denmark fastest in Europe
In Europe, Great Britain with just over 50 percent and Denmark with just under 50 percent boosted residents belong to the top. Denmark already started to provide its population with the booster vaccination in mid-September. The UK started the third vaccination in late September.
Switzerland is only in the lower midfield when it comes to boosting. In this country, the booster vaccination has been approved for people over 65 since the end of October, and at the end of November the pharmaceutical authority Swissmedic extended approval to include people over the age of 16. So far, just under 26 percent of the local population have received the booster vaccination. This puts Switzerland far behind Austria (just over 40 percent) and Germany (just under 40 percent).
Vaccination chief Christoph Berger: “Much better protection against Omikron with Booster”(01:35)
The global average is 7 percent
The booster vaccination is given even less frequently in the USA than in Switzerland. According to “Our World in Data”, only 22 percent of the people there are boosted. In the USA, the booster vaccination for certain population groups has been available since September.
Japan, with a population that has been boosted by 0.5 percent, is far behind at the end of the scale. However, the country only started giving the third vaccination just before Christmas. The average for boosting is around 7 percent worldwide. (oco)
