The right bank of Bordeaux soon plunged into darkness. This Monday, November 21, public lighting will be turned off on the entire eastern part of the ring road, including a section of the A630 motorway and the N230 national road. This light extinction concerns the Gironde municipalities of Bordeaux, Gradignan, Villenave-d’Ornon, Bègles, Bouliac, Floirac, Cenon, Artigues and Lormont. A decision taken within the framework of energy sobriety actions carried out by the State in the infrastructures for which it is responsible.

The western part of the ring road was already no longer lit since the work to upgrade it to 2×3 lanes in 2014, specifies the prefecture of Gironde, which adds however that “to maintain a good level of road safety for users, the lighting will be switched off in the current section but will be maintained at the right of the major motorway interchanges, as well as on the two major structures crossing the Garonne, the Aquitaine bridge and the François Mitterrand“.

This removal of bright lighting should allow a saving of 1400 MWh per year, specify the services of the State, “i.e. the equivalent of the annual consumption of 300 households“. A measure that will contributeto the efforts expected at times when the peak of electrical energy consumptionis the most intense», and will reduce light pollution in the Bordeaux conurbation. The impact of this removal of public lighting on road safety will be monitored, the results of which will be shared at the end of 2023.
