Much has been written in recent weeks about Boris Becker (52, "Life is not a game") and his trial in London. Now the former number one in world tennis broke his silence and commented for the first time in an interview with "Bild am Sonntag". Above all, the reporting in Germany does not fare particularly well with Becker: "The English media report relatively dryly, soberly. In Germany I have the feeling that a prejudice is taking place here."
What has been said or reported about him in part, he feels "not only as outrageous and angry, it is also damaging to my reputation." For some articles only his name is correct, nothing else. For example, it is untrue that he is only released on bail. His passport is with the lawyer: "If I travel abroad, I report this 48 hours in advance." He stated where he was going and for how long: "And then I will fly off. I received this requirement and there is nothing wrong with it."
In the further course of the process, he and his lawyers will get to the bottom of the truth: "I am nevertheless convinced and believe in the British legal system and its representatives. Of course, I will behave cooperatively and correctly in all points." In general, he could not understand the prejudice: "I am still innocent and have the right to be treated like every other citizen." He would like a fair, objective approach to his person.
So the prosecutor meant the "bad character"
Becker also just made the report that the responsible public prosecutor had attested him to be "bad in character": "By that she did not mean my personal character, that was not an insult or anything like that." The comment referred to a tax evasion case in which he was convicted in Germany 18 years ago.
"If you have such a criminal record, you can be called a 'bad character' in court," said Becker. His side had denied this, and the last word had not yet been spoken here. Compared to the outcome of the proceedings, in which Becker even threatens a prison sentence, he is "optimistic and in good spirits": "I will tackle this fight as I used to approach every big match."
