  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is number one politically.

  • He is struggling with exploding corona numbers, resistance, scandals and a resignation.

  • How long can Boris stay in office?

  • Interview with British historian and political scientist Anthony Glees *.

Despite the rapid spread of the Corona virus variant Omikron in Great Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not want to tighten the Corona measures over Christmas.

In doing so, he has apparently given in to pressure from within his own ranks: a third of his own cabinet is said to have spoken out against further restrictions. Nevertheless, it is questionable whether Johnson was able to avert a palace revolt against him with the decision.

In addition to the exploding corona numbers, Johnson and his government are also under pressure because of a party donation affair, alleged violations of the self-imposed corona rules or a bitter defeat in a by-election in Central England. Boris Johnson is definitely down for the population: In recent surveys, six out of ten Britons said that Boris will no longer be in office in a year.

P.Professor Glees, W.aren You Johnson’s friend, what would you advise him to do?

That he should get out of Downing Street as soon as possible and let someone else do the hideous job. That maybe in two or four years he can try to come back. Because it can only get worse be for Boris – it is probably the beginning of the end of his reign, and maybe coming dThe end now very, very quickly.

«What should the Tories wait for? That Boris should do more mischief? »»

Anthony Glees

Do you expect that this year?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Boris Johnson is at the door next weekend – even if my colleagues think it’s premature. But there is at least a consensus that Johnson is sure to abdicate by the summer of 2022. But whereup targetten the Tories wait? On that Boris even more nonsenset?

Johnson has turned back politically many times fought. Why not this time?

The Tory Party is also so successful because it can – and does – elect a new leader without hesitation. True, Boris was one better onesr liar than anyone else – from a well-known British commentator, not me – yes the British have the nose from his lying fully. In 2019 he promised to deliver Brexit. In 2021 he has to admit that there is still more quarrel with the EU and new Commercial contracts were simply a new edition of the old ones. All the scandals are coming the Add parties on Downing Street in lockdownu – there hears the fun for the population on: The human waren Isolated during this time, he kept to the rules, many could not even bury their loved ones. The British have the feeling that Boris Johnson is laughing in their faces. Meanwhile lies the Labor Party way ahead in opinion polls. And every Tory member knows that he or she could lose the seat if Johnson is prime minister any longer. This is what boggles the minds of these people right now.

“The British feel that Boris Johnson is laughing in their faces.”

Anthony Glees

Which Ooptions do Johnson still remain?

He could call new elections, but I don’t think he will. Instead it will Johnson will tryto stay on Downing Street as long as possible and for it to rule with Laborna so-called national government, which many British people are likely to support. Like ea working coalition to get out of thisr epidemie and crisis to come out. So it won’t be whole so easy to get rid of Boris – but just: if the Tories think iHm to lose, they’ll knock him out very quickly. Ask David Cameron or Theresa May.

“My wife has been looking for oatmeal for three weeks!”

Anthony Glees

What spits the Johnson administration more in the soup, Brexit or the pandemic?

I think Corona is currently spewing more in the government’s soup, but for the time being it will undoubtedly be Brexit that does the soup correct spoiled. Because the enormous sum of moneynwho have favourited Boris and his Finance minister Rishi Sunak – by the way, his most likely successor – recorded can only be paid for by a growing economy. But Brexit has obviously weakened the UK economy, between eleven and 15 percent, nobody knows that exactly. Anyway, dhe export to the EU, Great Britain’s largest export market, fell by 20 percent. And dhe new contracts with the EU will come into effect in ten years at the earliest grasp, if any. So: The British will get poorer and poorer and it will be harder and harder to repay the money they have borrowed. Seen in this way, I have to say: Die restriction Hopefully one day the pandemic will come to an end – in contrast to Brexit and its consequences.

As works does Brexit affect your own everyday life?

My wife and I live in ein a small town aoutside Oxford. This morning I couldn’t buy milk or cream because there weren’t enough vendors and drivers to deliver the products. The single market lacks the people and the government’s visa policy to attract guest workers for the Christmas season has done little. It’s not dissimilar like in the former GDR: From somen There are too many things, like bananas, on some days – two Tage is nothing anymore available. Also whole grain bread is not available – or imagine my wife has been looking for oatmeal for three weeks!

“I think the scandal photo was taken from the home of the finance minister.”

Anthony Glees

They say, Finance minister Sunak be Johnsons most promising successor. What about the new Brexit Minister, Foreign Minister Liz Truss?

In any case, both of them position themselves. Just think about that surfaced scandalPhoto from the garden party at 10 Downing Street. It was from the house of Finanzministers ashot us has, from Number 11 Downing Street out. That says a lot about Sunak’s ambitions out. On the other hand is it it is questionable whether the conservative Tories will have one Indian migrants as prime minister Select would. That wonders naof course aincluding Liz Truss. She distinguishes herself as the new Margaret Thatcher, who actually created the British internal market. Truss will tighten Johnson’s Brexit course again and want to score with it. And don’t forget David Frost either. He may have been eliminated, but he can still harm Boris Johnson in matters of Brexit and because of the corona measures. But I’m sticking to it: it is basically right neither experienced still especially able people in the Johnson Cabinet. Instead, much more capable politicians in the House of Commons have to watch the dunghill grow. This is the British drama right now.

What are your forecasts for your country for the coming year?

One should never make predictions, above allem not about the future, as the writer Marc Twain says. But I fear, to us come more gloomy times too. It is possible that Queen Elizabeth would be so sad that is not the coming year more survived. This is going to all sorts of things Upheavals in Great Britain.
