According to media reports, Johnson is refraining from a comeback. Johnson will not take part in his party’s elimination race for the post of prime minister, wrote the political chief of the British newspaper “The Times” on Twitter. Further details remained open for the time being.
He has the support of enough MPs to get into the next round of elections. However, he is far behind the top candidate, ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak. “There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election (…) and that I could actually be back in Downing Street on Friday,” said Johnson.

But over the past few days, Johnson has unfortunately come to the conclusion that running for office is not the right thing to do. “You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the ex-British Treasury Secretary had Rishi Sunak officially applied again for the office of Prime Minister. He already has significantly more than the necessary 100 supporters in the group.
The minister responsible for parliamentary issues is also in the running Penny Mordaunt, who officially announced their candidacy on Friday.
Nominations can be received until Monday afternoon. By next Friday at the latest, it should be clear who will head the government in the future.
