NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Boris Johnson said on Friday he would still be Britain’s prime minister in October despite doubts over his political future following the fine he received for breaching lockdown rules he had itself imposed on its fellow citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Traveling to India, with which he hopes to conclude a trade agreement by October, Boris Johnson answered “yes” to the question of a journalist asking him if he would still be head of the British government on this date.

The Conservative leader was forced on Thursday to agree to the creation of a parliamentary committee to investigate whether he knowingly misled MPs about “parties” being held in Downing Street despite health restrictions.

Calls for his resignation are increasing, including even in the ranks of the “Tories”.

For Boris Johnson, Britons would prefer the political class to focus on their priorities such as preserving purchasing power.

“I believe what people want in our country is for the government to look at and focus on the issues on which we were elected,” he said.
