Born alone: Mother gives birth to twins alone

Sarah Schmid is a mother of eight children – but her last birth was a novelty even for her: she gave birth to twins. Alone, in her living room.

Sarah Schmid has already given birth to eight children. The sheer number is astonishing moms who know that a baby is a little big challenge. But what is much more remarkable is the way she gave birth to her children – mostly alone, without help, and all at home.

Alone birth of eight children – including twins

After her first home birth, accompanied by it, Sarah Schmid decided to take the scepter into her own hands. And she succeeded five times so well that she has even given birth to twins on her own!

Samuel and Sarah, the newest family members, were born in April 2019 in the living room at home. Many of her siblings already saw the light of day there – for the mother, in turn, the place meant security. "Interestingly, I wasn't afraid of the birth," wrote Sarah Schmid in her birth report. Again, she had no medical help with her, only her husband and two camera women were to accompany her. And when she was about to present the place of birth to her – she preferred to give birth propped up between two chairs – the contractions started.

The birth was one of my easiest.

"With the next contraction the head was born, if I remember correctly. Then there was a longer pause, but he was already screaming, only with the head outside. Finally the shoulder rotation. My husband caught it at 10:56 p.m.," remembers Sarah Schmid to the first birth. But the second followed at the same time: "The contractions started again. I felt the girl's head in the starting position. No bank. Then a press contraction and I carried it out through my pelvis – with a stop for the shoulders. My husband caught her at 11:05 p.m., "the mother continues. And the twins were born.

Warning: This video shows a real birth – it can be disturbing for some viewers

"The birth was one of my easiest," Sarah Schmid writes on her. There, you could say regularly, she publishes her birth reports. The mother also lets other women have their say. All contributions have a mission that is very important to Sarah Schmid: "With my work, I hope to help a new female self-confidence and a birth culture beyond the fixation of doctors and anxiety."

After all, a single birth is inconceivable for many women. Too great fear, overwhelming, uncertainty. Sarah Schmid wants to change that:

I very much wish that many more women would dare to trust their own bodies, question fear and free themselves from the anxiety-driven obstetric system today.
