“Borrows that we would not have had to do”, the political parties are still waiting for their state grants

According to their results in the last legislative elections, political parties are used to receiving state funding. The latter varies but is often counted in millions of euros. However, more than a year after the election in question, the various parties have still not received a penny. In question, the numerous appeals before the Constitutional Council in the weeks following these legislative elections and which prevent the precise amount of these allocations from being determined. In the meantime, the parties are calling for an emergency payment from the state and are trying to adapt.

Because in the same way as for a company, the financing of political parties is expensive between the payment of rents, staff or even the organization of events and travel for employees. However, not everyone is in the same situation. Renaissance benefits, for example, from comfortable accumulated endowments accumulated between 2017 and 2022, which represents nearly 20 million euros per year. Conversely, other formations such as France insoumise or the National Rally suffer from the delay in payment from the State.

A two-part payment

“We borrowed 2.5 million euros at 5%. These are loans that we would not have had to make in normal times, if the subsidy had arrived in February or March as usual. So yes the delay in the state penalizes our treasury”, remarks Kévin Pfeffer, treasurer of the National Rally.

The flame party, which is about to receive 10 million euros per year for five years, would also like to definitively repay its Russian loan, which has become a political argument for its opponents. Finally, other parties such as the Republicans or Europe Ecologie Les Verts live on their cash, pending the payment of half of the allocations scheduled for July. The other half will be paid in October.
