BVB surprisingly promotes Lars Ricken to boss

Borussia Dortmund has announced a surprising new appointment: Lars Ricken will be promoted to the management of the Bundesliga club from May 1st. Sven Mislintat is also returning to BVB as technical director with a focus on squad planning.

Lars Ricken is surprisingly promoted to managing director of sports at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. The hero of the 1997 Champions League final will take over the position on May 1st and will receive a contract until June 30th, 2027. He will succeed Hans-Joachim Watzke. Ricken most recently worked successfully as director of the youth performance center. “I am convinced that with the incredible power of this club and the passion of our many motivated employees, we will achieve great victories together and steer Borussia Dortmund into a successful future.”

Until now, Sebastian Kehl was considered the favorite to inherit the Watzke legacy. Kehl remains sports director and will be supported in the future by returning Sven Mislintat as technical director. “I am sure that Borussia Dortmund, with its managing directors Thomas Treß, Carsten Cramer and Lars Ricken, will continue to have a first-class professional position in the future,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke, who will step down from the management at his own request at the end of 2025. Treß (Finance, Organization and Legal & Investor Relations) and Cramer (Sales & Marketing, Internationalization and Digitalization) had previously extended their contracts until June 2027.

“Lars Ricken’s expertise, his large network and the enormous identification with his home club, with which he also celebrated great success as a player, will enrich the management,” said President Reinhold Lunow. The club’s youth academy was ultimately “by far the most successful German NLZ of the past ten years.” Thomas Broich will continue Ricken’s work there.

An old friend also plays a role in the reorganization. Once referred to as the “Diamond Eye” because of his great ability to discover talent, Mislintat will return on May 1 as Technical Director with a focus on squad planning. He should report directly to Ricken and Kehl. The future of Kehl (contract until 2025) is still open. “Lars Ricken will begin discussions in the summer regarding a possible contract extension for Sebastian Kehl,” the club said in a statement.

For a long time, Kehl was considered the most promising candidate to succeed Watzke. But internally, people weren’t completely convinced by the 44-year-old. According to “Bild” information, Kehl could also extend his contract until 2027. When it comes to squad planning, however, he will lose influence due to the return of Mislintat. The big winner, however, is Ricken. “I would like to thank the presidential committee and the management for their trust,” said Ricken and lets the fans dream of new heroic deeds.
