Bottleneck in Graz LKH – party until the doctor comes: 8 young people in the hospital

Two years on the “dry”: On the first party weekend without restrictions, many Styrian young people more than made up for what they missed due to Corona. Three times as many “alcohol corpses” than on a weekend before 2020, the Graz children’s clinic counted on the normal ward.

The dry spell was too long, the “hunger for parties” too great after almost two years without disco, bass and shots: After last Friday at midnight it was finally possible to “celebrate like back then”, Styrian teenagers had to go to the Grazer on the first weekend Children’s hospital hanging on a drip – alcohol poisoning! “There were eight young people in just 48 hours – an outstanding number,” says the children’s hospital manager Ernst Eber, alarmed. For comparison: Before Corona, an average of 150 to 200 young people per year or three to four per week were admitted with alcohol poisoning. During the pandemic, the figure temporarily fell to 100 young people per year. Sad trend could still continue For Eber, it is obvious that this peak is related to the curfew. “This sad trend could continue in the next week or two,” he fears. After that, there is hope that the situation will settle down again. Because the “alk corpses” – six of them were 16 years old and two 17 – are currently taking away beds exactly where they are most urgently needed: there are up to 15 Corona every day -Patients in the normal ward. With the eight party tigers, a third of the currently limited beds were already occupied at the weekend. Important beds are blocked “But there are many other diagnoses where we need beds!” the doctor points out. And even if it works out: “Each of the eight young people is one too many in this already precarious situation.”
