Bouches-du-Rhône Marseille: a 16-year-old teenager kills himself while climbing between two metro trains

A 16-year-old young man was killed Thursday in the Marseille metro, after falling on the tracks from the coupling between two cars of a train, a practice called “train surfing”, announced this Friday the management of metropolitan transport.

It would be mounted on the attachment system between two oars

The victim was found “lifeless on the track, Thursday around 9:15 a.m., at La Blancarde station”, in the center-east of Marseille, said the Marseille metro authority (RTM) in a press release. “It would seem that the young man traveled between Timone and Blancarde stations”, neighbors on line 1 of the Marseille metro, “not inside the train but perched on a hitch, the attachment system between the cars of the same oar”.

The RTM will make video recordings available to investigators to confirm the circumstances of the accident.

A dangerous and prohibited practice

In its press release, it recalls the strict prohibition of this practice “particularly dangerous, just like that consisting of climbing onto the roof of trains in circulation”.

“Displays in all stations and in the trains as well as markings on the ground draw attention to the risk of such practices in order to dissuade all those who would like to move other than inside the train”, indicates the RTM. It ensures that “the new Marseille metro (NEOMMA project) will limit the risk of these dangerous practices” thanks to “the installation of platform doors and trains in one piece”.
