BoursoBank or Revolut… Which bank has the best application in France?

According to a recent and very serious study by Sia Partners, BoursoBank has the best mobile application among French banks. The distinction, however, is also claimed by Revolut. Explanations.

The BoursoBank mobile application ranks the best banking application in France. The information appeared on the website from BoursoBank on November 7. To assert this, online banking relies on a study calls Mobile Banking Benchmark 2023 and carried out by the Sia Partners firm. A very serious study, which evaluates, on more than 85 criteria, the functionality and user experience of applications of 148 banks in 19 countries around the world.

In fact, BoursoBank, formerly Boursorama Banque, is 16th place in the world and is the only French brand to benefit from Digital Leaders status. It is well ahead, in this order, of BNP Paribas, SG and Lydia, dedicated to Digital Challengers.

Others? They are further down the ranking, including certain online banks such as Hello bank, Ma French Bank or Fortuneo, classified as Digital Followers. Four brands even appear in the last car, that of the Digital Laggards: LCL, Crdit Agricole, HSBC and BforBank. Concerning the latter, the study is however prior to the 180% turn taken by the brand in mid-September 2023.

Revolut claims the title

BoursoBank best banking application in France? A competitor disagrees. In the crowd of the BoursoBank press release, the communication of the nobank Revolut broadcast the following message: The Revolut France teams are holding make a correction recalling that Revolut acts as a banking establishment in France through its branch (authorized by the ACPR), and that its banking application is available in France and used by more than 2.5 million users residing in the hexagon. In the 2023 SIA PARTNERS ranking, Revolut (Metal) is ranked 6th, while Boursorama is ranked 16ththus ahead of Boursorama by 10 places and establishing itself as the leading banking application in France, according to this ranking.

In fact, Revolut opened in May 2022 Revolut France, branch of Revolut Bank UAB, the entity holding, in Lithuania, the banking license allowing it to operate throughout the European Union. Its existence allows French customers in particular to benefit from a French IBAN account number and to escape, from next year, the chore of declaring their account to the tax authorities, as a foreign account.

Sia Partners has successfully integrated its test bench two versions of the Revolut mobile app (Revolut Metal and Revolut Standard). Nevertheless, the firm did the choice not to include it in its local rankings, neither in France, nor in any country where the nobank is present: As part of our study, Revolut being an international nobank, the application was tested by a pool of Sia Partners testers from different geographical locations (France , USA, United Kingdom, Netherlands…). Therefore, we have decided not to display Revolut’s ranking in our local rankings, including France, explains Albert Brahamcha, Associate Manager Financial Services at Sia Partners.

Revolut ahead of BoursoBank, but only in Metal version

If a different choice had been made, could Revolut actually have claimed the title of best banking app in France? The answer is yes, but only in its Metal version, charges 13.99 euros per month. The Standard version (free) would have appeared in 3rd place, just behind BoursoBank.

Sia Partners could also have chosen to integrate N26, another international nobank with several million customers in France. In this case, the latter would have ranked 5th place, between BNP Paribas and SG.
