Bourvil: why the actor hid his cancer

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Bourvil’s death, his son, Dominique Raimbourg, decided to pay tribute to him through an exhibition of photos and filming objects in Lille. He also returned to his last days of life.

50 years ago, at the age of 53, Bourville breathed his last. He succumbed to bone marrow cancer that he had hidden from everyone. In the columns of Parisian, his son, Dominique Raimbourg, has revealed the reason why he does not want his cancer to be made public. “He was afraid that the insurance would prevent him from playing. He also shot his last films with producers who agreed not to be covered by insurance. My father liked to play. And as long as he was spinning, he felt like he could escape death“, he confided. Being the son of Bourvil has not always been easy. The actor was not very present because he worked a lot.

He was a workaholic. When I was very young, he often made films during the day and in the evening he was on stage to play La Route Fleurie, which he performed 1,300 times between 1951 and 1956. But he was present at home when same: he took vacations with us, we went every summer to our country house in Yvelines and to his parents in Bourville“, still remembered his son. As he was on stage or in his films, Bourvil was a very funny person. Dominique Raimbourg remembers laughing a lot with him at home. “He loved to laugh and was extremely cheerful by nature. A trifle amused him: he had the particularity of seeing the comic behind the tragic and, conversely, the tragic behind the comic. He had a very particular sensitivity.”

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, Bourvil’s son decided to pay him a new tribute by installing, in Lille, an exhibition of photos and filming objects. What to dive back a few years earlier and to remember the genius he was.
