Colas and TOA Road launch marketing

of Wattway in Japan

Colas Japan and its partner TOA Road have just launched the marketing of the Wattway photovoltaic road surface in Japan. This initiative marks a new stage in the deployment of this innovative solution internationally.

The product offered is Wattway Pack, an installation of 3 to 18 associated photovoltaic tiles

  • an energy storage system. It is used to supply electrical equipment at the edge of the road (lighting, surveillance cameras, charging of electric bicycles or Wi-Fi) and to make them autonomous, including in the event of unavailability of the electricity network.

Wattway Pack is an off-grid energy production solution particularly suitable for urban areas, parks, cycle paths and charging points for soft mobility.

In this country which is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and where the available surface area is very limited, Wattway is a complementary solution for developing renewable energies, emphasizes Kaoru Naganuma, director of Colas Japan.

Wattway has the potential to become a photovoltaic power generation solution of the future in Japan, in cities, especially as an emergency power source for disaster relief centers, says Takashi Matsumura, TOA Road’s Chief Technology Officer.

TOA Road, a Japanese construction group and partner of Colas Japan, is also carrying out tests to assess the resistance of Wattway in the Japanese climate, in order to consider other uses for this solution in Japan.

With this new project, Wattway, a technology developed jointly by Colas and the National Solar Energy Institute (CEA-INES), is continuing its international deployment, which began several years ago.
