The weekend was rather (very) calm at the American box office. While the rooms struggled to fill, Civil War retained its throne won last week, and left the new releases – the horror film Abigail And The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Guy Ritchie – far behind. We take stock.

Civil War in the top 5 of A24

For its second weekend of operation, Alex Garland’s dystopia grossed $11.1 million, down 56.4%. A solid retention for a rather divisive film given its very political subject. This result is also to be credited to its fleet of IMAX screenings which naturally bring in more money.

This score carries the cumulative Civil War at 44.8 million dollars in the United States, and brings the film into the top 5 of studio A24 in the United States, behind Everything Everywhere All At Once (77.1 million), Uncut Gems (50 millions), Lady Bird (48.9 million) and The hand (48.2 million). Not sure that this is quite enough to absorb the film’s budget estimated at 50 million, the largest in the studio’s history.

As said above, the rest of the ranking is rather moribund. The horror movie Abigail doesn’t impress more than that and only totaled $10.2 million for its debut, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom clings to third place with 9.4 million greenbacks collected for its fourth weekend. This brings the film’s cumulative total to 485 million, in the high range of previous installments of the MonsterVerse.

This weekend’s flop goes to Guy Ritchie’s latest film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which only grossed 9 million during its inaugural weekend. The action comedy will struggle to find balance despite a rather modest budget of $60 million.

Above all, it is a new failure for Henry Cavill after the catastrophic Argyle last February. The actor struggles to convince audiences outside of his films as Superman. We must in fact go back to 2018 and Mission: Impossible – Fallout to find popular cinema success under his belt.

Henry Cavill is struggling to become a sure thing in cinemas.
