It’s official : Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is one of the big failures of 2023. Released a week ago, James Mangold’s film has already just been dethroned at the American box office by Insidious: The Red Door.

The franchise’s worst score

For its second weekend of operation in the United States, Indiana Jones 5 raised only $26.5 million (-56%). A low score for the blockbuster, which is thus stung first place by the horror film Insidious: The Red Door (32.6 million), at the top of the ranking.

With only $121 million raised on American soil to date, Harrison Ford’s latest adventure confirms its status as a flop in theaters on American soil… and around the world. Globally, the film hardly reaches 247 million dollars, very far from the scores of previous opuses.

To compare, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skullreleased in 2008, had at the time totaled $786.6 million worldwide. The Last Crusade (1989) ended its career at 474 million dollars, ahead of The Cursed Temple (1984, 333 million) and The Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981, 367 million)… And all this without even taking inflation into account.

Beyond these calamitous figures, it is above all its gigantic budget, estimated at 295 million dollars, which handicaps the film. Lucasfilm and Disney had to approach a billion to make the blockbuster profitable. It is obvious today that the studios will leave feathers there… and perhaps bring about the end of the Kathleen Kennedy era?

Indiana Jones 5: the trailer and the official title of the film finally revealed

In the rest of the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continues its magnificent journey, with 642 million gleaned on the globe. A success for the animated film with a budget of 100 million dollars. This sequel is even much better than the first opus, which ended its career at 384 million dollars.
