Box office France: here are the Top 10 summer hits and there are surprises!

Summer 2023 box office: which films were a hit and surprised? We take stock in our Spotlight podcast. After the success of Barbie and Oppenheimer, what future for superhero films?

New episode of our Spotlight podcast. This week, we take stock of the summer 2023 box office, marked by the unexpected successes, at this level, of Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Barbie is on its way to 6 million admissions in France, and Oppenheimer has already exceeded 4 million. But what other films were a hit?

Here are the Top 10 films released between June 14 and September 13, 2023*

1 – barbie : 5,696,003 entries

2 – Oppenheimer : 4,278,772 entries

3 – Elementary: 2,995,492 entries

4 – Indiana Jones 5: 2,940,622 entries

5 – Mission Impossible 7: 2,602,202 entries

6 – Miraculous the film: 1,625,874 entries

7 – In very troubled waters: 1,600,997 entries

8 – Gran Turismo: 1,037,308 entries

9 – The Flash: 855,680 entries

10 – Anatomy of a fall: 800,197 entries

Successes that leave, somewhere, in the dust, superheroes… The Flash, the only superhero film released this summer, is only in 8th place. For the record, as we talk about in our podcast, The Marvels was initially supposed to be released this summer, and was finally moved to the fall date of November 8, 2023.

In the first part of this podcast, we will start from this quick analysis of the box office to address, in a 2nd and 3rd part (to be continued next week) what we call “superhero fatigue”… What it covers, the declarations it has provoked and what it could imply for the future…

After an inflation of Marvel and DC films, could the studios scale back? Who would have bet on Barbie and Oppenheimer at the top of the summer box office? We talk about it in Spotlight.

To support this summary of the summer, let us point out the very good longevity ofElementary. The Pixar film thus reached 3rd place, with a cumulative total of 3 million admissions. He has just crossed this threshold!

Indiana Jones 5 is in 4th place, but brings together less than episode 4. Mission Impossible 7 is just behind, with a score around the franchise average.

Two French films find a place in this top 10: Miraculous, a film derived from the successful animated series, and the Palme d’Or which occupies 10th place, already accumulating 800,000 admissions at the time of writing these lines. Great success for Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet, which continues to unite, since it was, this week, at the top of the French box office.

As for French cinema, let’s mention the sensation and surprise Yannick by Quentin Dupieux. Raphael Quenard has established himself as this summer’s favorite actor. Yannick has become filmmaker Quentin Dupieux’s biggest success to date, with almost 400,000 admissions, ahead of Incredible but True (318,000 admissions).

On the surprise side, in this non-exhaustive assessment, there is a nod to La Voie Royale by Frédéric Mermoud, described as the “summer sleeper” (a film which ensures great longevity).
