We had almost ignored it, but a new adaptation of a video game was released in cinemas: Gran Turismo. Based on the title for PlayStation, the film sits at the US box office this weekend, despite a start deemed weak. We take stock.

Accident or diesel start?

With 17.3 million dollars raised across the Atlantic, Gran Turismo enjoys an inglorious first place on a quiet weekend. A starving score, far from other films of the genre like the recent ones Uncharted (44 million), mortal kombat (23.3 million) and tomb Raider (23.6 million), and which also includes many previews.

The work was also released at the height of the film festival in the United States, with an advantageous reduction in ticket prices. Not sure that Gran Turismo rolls past this event, despite its modest $60 million budget. Worldwide, the adaptation of the video game currently accumulates 53.8 million greenbacks.

It’s another failure for Neill Blomkamp, after Chappie and the expensive Elysium. The promising director has never managed to repeat the success of District 9a surprise box in 2009 with 212 million dollars collected worldwide for a small budget of 30 million.

On his side, Blue Beetle confirms its resounding failure. If the decline of the DC superhero is rather limited (-49%) in the second week, it already falls to 3rd place in the ranking with 12.7 million dollars collected, for an American total of 46 million.

Worldwide, the film is painfully reaching $81 million in revenue and should end in the same waters as Shazam 2 (133 million). New industrial disaster for DC and Warner Bros, therefore.

Box office: Barbie rushes towards the billion, Oppenheimer does better than Batman

The rest of the standings remain more or less the same as throughout the summer. Barbie remains in 2nd position and currently cumulates 1.340 billion dollars in the world. Greta Gerwig’s film should exceed Super Mario Bros. next week to officially become the biggest hit of 2023.

On his side, Oppenheimer continues on its merry way and gleans an additional 9 million dollars, reaching the symbolic bar of 300 million in the United States. With a world total of 777 million, Christopher Nolan’s feature film still has Inception (837 million) in the line of sight.
