The end of Marvel’s supremacy at the box office is confirmed. The film The Marvels only raised $47 million for its launch on American territory, the worst start in the history of the MCU, which began in 2008.

The end of an era

While analysts saw the latest Marvel installment around $70-80 million for its first weekend on the big screen, The Marvels ultimately started well below these forecasts. This 33rd MCU film marks the worst start in the universe, even below The Incredible Hulk ($55.4 million in 2008) and the first Ant-Man ($57.2 million in 2015).

The film fails to save the furniture internationally, where it only collects 63.3 million in 51 territories. A global launch at 110 million greenbacks far from the expectations of Disney, which hoped for at least 140. A failure all the more flagrant as the budget of the film amounts to 275 million dollars.

If Marvel has tended to mark time for several years, this is the first time that it has experienced such a bitter failure. In February, the poorly received Ant-Man 3 had started with 106 million dollars, while Guardians of the Galaxy 3 had started with a weekend of 118 million. Even the unpopular The Eternals had recorded a better launch (71.2 million).

As a reminder, the first film Captain Marvel had generated 1.1 billion dollars worldwide in 2019. A success that can be attributed in particular to a release date in the heart of “Marvel Mania”, between Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: Endgame. The next chapter of the MCU coming to theaters is Deadpool 3 (July 26, 2024), the only film in the franchise scheduled for next year. Let’s hope for Disney that he gets things back on track.

In the rest of the box office, Five Nights at Freddy’s achieves its surprise success, with 9 million dollars raked in for its 3rd weekend. The Blumhouse horror film (The Conjuring, Insidious) thus peaks at 251 million dollars worldwide. Not bad for a feature film that cost… 20 million.
