The reign of Dune 2 at the American box office lasted only one week, the fault of a panda adept at martial arts. Denis Villeneuve’s masterpiece nevertheless retains great momentum and is already shaping up to be one of the hits of 2024, while the animated franchise from Dreamworks is getting a new life. We take stock.
Franchise Kung Fu Panda leaves again
Dreamworks has undoubtedly just relaunched one of its most prestigious intellectual properties. With $58.3 million raised for its launch, Kung Fu Panda 4 claims the top spot at the American box office, and marks the franchise’s best start since the first opus released in 2008 (60.2 million).
The sequel thus reverses the dynamic of an aging saga by doing significantly better than Kung Fu Panda 2 (47.6 million) and Kung Fu Panda 2 (41.2 million). At this rate, Kung Fu Panda 4 can hope to exceed 600 million dollars worldwide. What is certain is that the adventures of Po the panda are far from over.
Relegated to second place, Dune: part two has nothing to be ashamed of and rakes in $46 million for its second weekend, a decline of only 44% compared to the first. Excellent retention for a production of this size, and which confirms the success of Denis Villeneuve’s film.
This nice score allows the blockbuster to pass the 150 million mark on American soil, and to total 367 million dollars across the globe. At this rate, Dune: part two can hope to end its run between 800 and 900 million dollars. If it has not yet been officially announced, a sequel is undoubtedly already in the pipeline at Warner Bros.
In the rest of the box office, the horror film Imaginary by Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Get Out) records $10 million for its startup. Despite the mediocre quality of the feature film, this confirms the strategy of Jason Blum’s production company: modest budget, good marketing campaign and big start. The film is already sure to break even.
Finally, the biopic one Love on Bob Marley collects an additional 4 million dollars this weekend and manages to stay in fifth place in the ranking. With only 160 million dollars worldwide, the film is far from being the success announced and will have difficulty completely repaying its budget (70 million, not counting marketing). We are far from the box of Bohemian Rhapsody (910 million) in 2018.
