Mexican boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez secured the WBO super middleweight title in front of over 73,000 spectators in Dallas. Alvarez defeated the Briton Billy Joe Saunders by technical knockout and thus also defended his belts of the WMC and WBA associations.
After the event in front of the largest audience in the United States since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, Saunders was hospitalized with a suspected eye socket, as the Daily Mirror reported. First of all, the Briton has long proven to be a tough opponent in the Dallas Cowboys football stadium. When he can no longer see sufficiently in the eighth round after several powerful blows in the right eye, his corner throws in the towel.
Saunders had previously been unbeaten in 30 professional fights. Alvarez has now won 56 of his 59 career fights after his victory. In the long term, “Canelo” wants to be the first boxer to crown himself world champion of all associations. All that is missing after the success over Saunders is the IBF title currently held by the American Caleb Plant.
The event at AT&T Stadium also had the largest US audience in the history of indoor boxing events. (AFP)
