A few hours before the resumption of Ligue 1, a massive wave of reports has taken down the official account of DAZN France, the official broadcaster of Ligue 1. The resumption of the French football championship promises to be hot.
To win the hearts of the French, the English streaming service DAZN still has a lot of work to do.
Chosen on July 14 by the LFP to broadcast Ligue 1, with a resumption from August 16, after months of media drama, DAZN is under fire from critics because of its prices (between 30 and 40 euros per month) and its editorial policy (taking over at the last minute, no consultations in stadiums, etc.). Internet users are massively relaying the hashtag #BoycottDAZN with the aim of bringing down the platform. Many are hoping for a Mediapro-style fiasco, with the abandonment of DAZN and the return of historic players like Canal+ in the coming months.
If DAZN is not Mediapro (it is a solid player that broadcasts football in many countries), the #BoycottDAZN movement is putting serious obstacles in its way. On August 16, a few hours before the first Ligue 1 match, Internet users managed to suspend its Twitter account by reporting it en masse.

Wanting to bring down DAZN: a mistake for French football
While DAZN’s prices are undeniably too high, the strategy employed by the streaming service is to point out that the prices chosen are the consequence of the high value of Ligue 1 according to the LFP. “The consumer must understand that he is not paying for DAZN, he is paying for the League and the clubs” explained Shay Segev, the boss of DAZN, in L’Équipe on August 14. DAZN promises new offers soon, why not with the purchase of individual matches, to prove that it can be flexible.
In any case, the anger is growing stronger online. The hashtag #BoycottDAZN is very popular, with the risk of seeing many football fans skip the first day this weekend (or turn to piracy). DAZN plans to offer a match on Sunday (Toulouse-Nantes, at 5 p.m.), but knows that it will take time to reassure people about its intentions.


Between DAZN (8 Ligue 1 matches), beIN Sports (1 Ligue 1 match + other championships), Canal+ (English championship and European cups), football fans know that it risks spending a lot this year. DAZN, which starts with a showdown with its potential subscribers, has a few weeks to reverse the trend. The service is appreciated in other countries, but its forceful entry at the last moment makes it unpopular in spite of itself.
Without a Twitter account (even though DAZN will probably have it restored by tonight, if they can contact X), DAZN might be unable to share images of the best goals on social networks. It’s a shame, because that’s exactly where they were planning to innovate, with a partnership with Free.
