In 2016, Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard star in “Allied,” a historical film directed by Robert Zemeckis. And in a few days, it’s leaving Netflix.
Brad Pitt loves to beat up Nazis. After Fury and Inglourious Basterds, the actor signed on in 2015 to star in Allied, with Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) directing. The latter fell in love with Steven Knight’s (Peaky Blinders) script and wanted to make a war film at the time.
It takes us to Casablanca in 1942. In the service of Allied counter-espionage, agent Max Vatan meets French resistance fighter Marianne Beauséjour during a high-risk mission. It is the beginning of a passionate relationship. They get married and start a new life in London. A few months later, Max is informed by the British secret services that Marianne could be a German spy. He has 72 hours to discover the truth about the one he loves.
A glamorous couple
Who better than the most American of French women to land the role of Marianne? When it came to finding his other leading lady, Zemeckis immediately thought of Marion Cotillard who has appeared several times in Hollywood (Inception, Big Fish, Batman…) and for the greatest directors.
Marion Cotillard talks about her American roles
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, a glamorous couple in the same film? That was all it took to attract the attention of spectators and get them to go and see this psychological drama in theaters where deception is the key word. Nearly 1 million curious little ones will go to see Allied in French theaters.
Allied will nevertheless receive mixed reviews and will be considered a semi-commercial failure, bringing in “only” 113 million dollars for 85 million greenbacks invested. Despite its technical achievement, the press has regularly pointed out the lack of alchemy between the two actors…
A tribute to Casablanca
Screenwriter Steven Knight, who was inspired by a true story, wanted to pay homage to the great spy films and to a timeless classic of the 7th art: Casablanca. The first part of Allied takes place in the Moroccan white city, which also served as the setting for the romance between Bogart and Bergman.
The two feature films share more than one thing in common: they both take place during the Second World War and see the birth of a romance between their main characters. Rick’s American Café gives way here to a nightclub with sumptuous decor where Max (Pitt) and Marianne (Cotillard) meet for the first time…
Joanna Johnston, Zemeckis’ favorite costume designer, revealed that she was inspired by Casablanca and A Woman Seeking Her Destiny to create the outfits worn by our two heroes. Vintage but elegant.
Allies is leaving Netflix on August 11th.
