Brandt saves a hard-fought draw
BVB proves comeback quality against Eintracht

Frankfurt shocked Borussia Dortmund with two goals early in the duel. But BVB managed to equalize and later even made another comeback. Joker Julian Brandt brings the final point in a hard-fought game in the pouring rain – and thus maintains the unbeatable series.
Borussia Dortmund’s winning streak was broken in the constant rain in Frankfurt, but BVB remains at the top of the table. Coach Edin Terzic’s team came from behind to draw 3-3 (1-2) against Eintracht and have been unbeaten in 17 Bundesliga games across the seasons. After five wins in a row, Dortmund conceded goals from Omar Marmoush (8th minute/hand penalty/24th) and Farés Chaibi (68th) a week before the big game against FC Bayern Munich. Marcel Sabitzer (45th), Youssoufa Moukoko (54th) and Julian Brandt (82nd) saved the point.
“I have very mixed feelings. We can’t complain about the game ending in a draw,” said coach Edin Terzic on the streaming service DAZN. “It was a very wild game,” said BVB substitute goalkeeper Alexander Meyer: “We didn’t get into it well, fought back and were rewarded. All in all, after the 2-0 defeat, it’s a point gained.” Nico Schlotterbeck explained: “Based on how the game went, it’s probably a point won. It was completely okay with the ball in the first half, but we didn’t get any access to the ball. (…) We have to fix that and do better. “
The Hessians missed their fourth win in a row across all competitions. “We played a very strong game. At the end it feels annoying at first that we didn’t bring home the victory,” said Frankfurt’s Ansgar Knauff. “Getting a point against Dortmund is still a good result.”
Against Borussia’s defense, which was often helpless and disoriented, Frankfurt once again came up strong in front of 56,500 spectators. The Swede Hugo Larsson had a great chance to take the lead in the third minute, but BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel parried the shot. After another attempt to clear the ball hit Marius Wolf’s arm. According to video evidence, there was a penalty for Eintracht, and Marmoush converted.
Inspired by their recent successes, the Frankfurt team constantly put the runner-up under pressure and repeatedly came dangerously in front of the opposing goal, especially from the right wing. After Aurélio Buta failed twice against Kobel, Marmoush dusted himself off. The Egyptian international has already scored eight goals across all competitions.
Frankfurt dominates – BVB efficiently
Shortly afterwards, Kobel had to be replaced with an injury. He was replaced by Alexander Meyer, who quickly distinguished himself and knocked the ball away from Marmoush, who was ready to score. The Eintracht striker claimed a foul, but this time the video evidence didn’t help Frankfurt.
Dortmund not only had deficiencies in defense, they also had difficulty building up the game. It wasn’t until stoppage time in the first half that they scored the final goal through Sabitzer, who scored from 16 meters. Afterwards, Mats Hummels could have equalized from a similar position, but his shot from the outside went wide. BVB were lucky when the tireless Marmoush only hit the left post in return.
After the break, things continued as before: Frankfurt dominated, Dortmund barely held on. Nevertheless, Borussia still seemed to live up to their reputation as masters of efficiency when Moukoko made it 2-2. Because national striker Niclas Füllkrug was just in front of keeper Kevin Trapp, Eintracht complained about offside – but in vain.
After Frankfurt took the lead again, the fans saw a highly entertaining final phase. National player Brandt made the BVB fans who had traveled with him cheer, but Dortmund were unable to score the winning goal.
