Brave, the privacy-focused, Chromium-based browser now has 50 million monthly active users. A small feat when we remember that the latter, launched in 2016, had “only” 24 million monthly active users at the end of 2020. The fact remains that relying on the browser market will be difficult to say the least while the champion of the Google Chrome industry now has billions of active users on Chrome, Android, iOS and Windows.

Brave can however count on its advanced features in terms of privacy protection. Its main selling point to people is that it doesn’t sell targeted ads but rather exchanges attention through cryptocurrency. Brave offers its users the choice of viewing advertisements in exchange for its cryptocurrency, the Basic Attention Token (BAT). Brave management is betting on the fact that the public today wants private browsers with tools allowing them to free themselves from the internet sponsored by advertising that finances Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

An argument that could well hit the mark. Privacy has indeed become a competitive differentiator between browser makers, most of which use Google’s open source Chromium project for their products, including Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Vivaldi.

2.3 billion requests between June and December 2021

As a reminder, Brave has also launched a new search engine, while privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo recently launched its own browser. Brave claims to have recorded 2.3 billion queries on its search engine between June and December 2021.

Brave does not share the details of its revenue but claims that its BAT revenue has quadrupled in the past 12 months and now has 8 million users who earn BAT through Brave Rewards. Brave also prides itself on its business success, citing branded customers such as Ford, PayPal, Toyota, Mastercard, Intel, Crocs, BMW, Keurig, American Express, Budweiser, Walmart, Amazon and Home Depot, as well as major customers of cryptocurrency Binance, Coinbase, Crypto.com, eToro, Gemini and Solana.

“Passing the 50 million user mark is a tremendous milestone for our company. It is also a powerful confirmation of the ongoing global movement led by users seeking alternatives to the surveillance economy, ”said Brendan Eich, chief and co-founder of Brave.

“We have spent a fruitful year expanding our product line and ecosystem, engaging with partners who share our vision of a web freed from the shackles of Big Tech. We have seen an incredible response among our users, our creators and our community. We aim to double this growth again in 2022 and engage with even more users who are looking for a privacy-friendly way to browse the web that rewards them instead of punishing them with tracking. , and which helps them directly support creators. “
