The company behind the Brave browser has just made its new intelligent chatbot available, to compete with ChatGPT. The focus is, obviously, on private life.

Brave wants to continue to diversify its product catalog. After a web browser and a search engine, the company has just made its ChatGPT-style AI available to the general public. The latter, which emphasizes privacy, was in the testing phase for many months in the beta versions of the web browser, but has just arrived on the stable version of the software. The idea is to compete with OpenAI’s solution, while avoiding swallowing the personal data of its users.

A ChatGPT respectful of privacy

Brave’s AI is accessible directly from the browser interface, either by typing a request in the address bar, or by invoking a dedicated interface with the star-shaped button, present in the browser sidebar. Note that only version 1.60 of the software allows you to chat with Leo.

In terms of functionality, Brave promises that Leo will be able to answer all your questions, requests and requests, like a ChatGPT without the advanced image analysis or PDF file synthesis features. The tool will allow you to synthesize the content of a web page, create content on the fly or help you create scripts and snippets of code.

Obviously, the No. 1 argument for Brave’s AI is privacy. Unlike other competing tools, Leo will dissociate the requests addressed to it from the IP addresses of Internet users (thanks to a reverse-proxy mechanism), the discussions are not kept on any server and will not be used for AI training. No account or personal information is needed to start using Leo.

A Premium version at $15 per month

Technically, Brave’s AI uses Llama 2, the language model developed by Meta. A “Premium” version of the tool (accessible via a subscription at $15 per month) allows you to switch to Claude, a language model developed by Anthropic and “who excels in logical reasoning and coding» according to Brave. “Leo is designed in such a way that many different models can be connected to it. […] Other models will be offered over time and users will be able to choose», Specified the technical manager of the company in a response to the media The Verge.

At the moment, Leo is only available on Windows, macOS and Linux. The Brave app on Android and iOS doesn’t yet have the rights to play AI magic, but Brave has promised that this will be fixed “in the coming months“.
