tla./(Reuters) According to Reuters news agency, a court in Brazil on Friday released a German diplomat who was arrested earlier this month in connection with the death of his Belgian husband. Thus, he can face the investigation into murder at liberty.

Uwe Herbert Hahn had been temporarily arrested in Rio de Janeiro since August 7 after the death of his husband Walter Biot. Prosecutors have not yet filed any charges against him. His release was confirmed by the Rio de Janeiro State Prisons Authority after Judge Rosa Helena Guita ruled that prosecutors had missed the original deadline to present the charges.

In her Aug. 25 decision, Guita cited a clear violation of the time limit for filing a criminal complaint, noting that nine days after the statutory 10-day time limit had expired, no charges had yet been filed. Rio de Janeiro prosecutors said in a statement to Reuters that they had not yet been asked to file charges. “The period for filing charges has not even begun,” the statement said.

At the time of Biot’s death, Hahn said he fell from their apartment in the Ipanema neighborhood after falling ill. Police arrested Hahn on suspicion of murder after forensics found traces of blood in the home and an autopsy on Biot’s body revealed multiple wounds, leading them to classify the case as a “violent death.”
